3 must-know tips to manage your card security and spending

The digital revolution has never been as accelerated like recent times. From running your usual banking errands and ordering your meals on your favourite food delivery app, to stocking up on your skincare must-haves and booking the tickets for the local attractions, almost anything and everything can be done online today. All you need is your credit/debit card or banking app.

Like all good things, the rapid adoption of technology has also given rise to opportunistic frauds, scams and phishing attempts.

To stay vigilant and not become the next victim, here are 3 great hacks to know to help you manage your card security and your card spending.

1. Full control to lock your debit/credit card temporarily and immediately with Payment Controls

Have you ever encountered the scenario in which you accidentally “misplaced” your debit/credit card at home? You know that you left it somewhere in your house, but you can’t seem to recall where exactly.

You then reached out to the customer hotline to ask to block and cancel your card as a precaution, just in case, you remembered wrongly and dropped your card outside of your home.

With the new Payment Controls, you now have full control to lock your DBS/POSB Cards instantly on your DBS/POSB digibank app. What’s more, if you happen to find your card again, you can easily unlock it through this self-service temporary lock/unlock function.

2. Added layer of security that lets you enable or disable specific transactions that might be a scam/fraud

In 2020, there was a record number of scam cases in Singapore where scammers fleeced more than $201 million from unsuspecting victims. While more and more of us are moving to online purchases, staying vigilant 24/7 against internet scams, impersonation frauds and phishing attempts can be tough, especially when these schemes are constantly evolving to weave in more believable and relatable stories.

To give you an added layer of security, you can similarly use your Payment Controls to disable specific types of transactions which you suspect might be a scam or fraudulent transaction, from online, contactless, cash advance to overseas in-store transactions.

For instance, if you are not travelling overseas, you can opt to lock all your overseas transactions. By locking them, you will be 100% sure that your card won’t be used to sanction any overseas transaction. Similarly, if you aren’t someone who shops online, you can opt to disable your online transactions to give yourself the assurance that no fraudster can use your card for any online purchase.

3. Manage monthly spending limit for each billing cycle

Have you ever checked your monthly credit card bill statement, only to realise that you accidentally spent more than the budget you set for yourself for the month? Well, it happens.

Beyond adding additional security features to your credit card, DBS Payment Controls allows you to have full control over how much you want to limit your credit card spending within the billing cycle.

For example, if you want to keep your spending this month to $1,500, you can implement it as a budget through Payment Controls. With this setting in place, you won’t be able to spend beyond $1,500, unless you consciously readjust the spend limit.
