Frequently Asked Questions

Application

My child's school isn't a Smart Buddy school. Can they still get a Smart Buddy card or watch?

Yes! You can apply for a Smart Buddy card or watch online. Your child can then use it for payments at over 10,000 NETS retailers across Singapore, outside of school.

Can my child use Smart Buddy without a POSB/DBS Kids account?

Yes, they can. However, the "Auto-transfer Savings" feature won't be available. Any savings your child accumulates will stay in your linked bank account.

Note: To enjoy automatic savings transfers to your child, simply open a "My Account" for them. It will instantly link with their Smart Buddy.

Account Linkage

I forgot to link my child's bank account during application. How can I do this?

You can submit an online request to link their bank account. Once approved, activate "Auto-transfer Savings" in the Smart Buddy app. With this activated, your child's monthly savings will automatically move from your account to theirs by the 10th of the following month. Please ensure you have enough money in your deduction account during the first 10 days of the month for a smooth transfer.

Which types of accounts can be used for Auto-transfer?
  • Joint Accounts: Accounts you (the parent who applied for Smart Buddy) share with your child or another party.
  • Solo/Personal Accounts: Accounts exclusively for your child.

Note: Your child's account for receiving savings cannot be the same as the account you use for Smart Buddy deductions.

How can I change the bank account linked for Smart Buddy deductions? You have two easy ways to update this:
  1. DBS/POSB digibank Online:
    • Go to "Cards."
    • Select "Link Card to Deposit Account for ATM Use."
    • Choose your Smart Buddy card.
    • Then, change the linked account for deductions.
  2. DBS/POSB digibank Mobile:
    • Tap "More."
    • Then, "Manage Cards & Loans."
    • Select "Link Card to Account."
    • Find your Smart Buddy card under "POSB ATM Card" and update the account.

Note: Please do not select a digiVault account for deductions as it is not supported. Your Smart Buddy card/payment chip appears as a "POSB ATM card" in digibank. To find it, match the 9th to 15th digits of your physical card number with the corresponding entry in the app (e.g., if your card shows XXXXXXXX 00428675, look for POSB ATM CARD 00428670 in digibank).

Payments

Can Smart Buddy be used for concession fares on MRT/bus rides?

No, Smart Buddy is not designed for public transport use.

  • All rides will be charged at the full adult fare.
  • You might experience occasional issues during transit.
  • Public transport transactions won't show up in the Smart Buddy app.

For full details or to check transit history, please visit the TransitLink website.

Why do I see "[OFFLINE $]" transactions?

This happens when canteen terminals are temporarily offline. Your child's purchases are still processed, but the money is deducted from your account later, once the terminals are back online. This might sometimes make it look like your child has gone over their daily allowance.

Money was deducted, but my child didn't spend today. Why?

This is likely due to an "[OFFLINE $]" transaction. Your child probably made a purchase when the terminal was temporarily offline, and the payment was processed with a delayed deduction. You can compare your Smart Buddy app transaction history with your bank statement to find the matching transaction.

My child can't make payments with their Smart Buddy card or watch. What should I do?

Please check the following:

  1. Activation: Make sure the card or chip is activated and correctly inserted into the watch.
  2. Allowance: Confirm that enough allowance has been set via the Smart Buddy app.
  3. Funds: Verify that there's enough money in your linked bank account.
  4. ATM Card Limit: Ensure your ATM Card limit is set to the default S$2000.
  5. NETS Payment (Outside School): If at a NETS retailer, advise them to "Pay via NETS" or select the NETS option at self-service kiosks.

If you still have issues after these checks, please contact us for further assistance.

My child bought digital Smiley Stamps at school. Do they also get physical ones?

Students who buy digital Smiley Stamps might also receive physical ones (while stocks last). Only digital Smiley Stamps have a value of S$0.50 each; physical stamps are just for fun.

Where do Smiley Stamp Savings go if I haven't linked my child's account?

If your child's account isn't linked, all Stamp Savings will be credited back to your (the parent's) linked Smart Buddy deduction account by the 10th of the following month.

I increased my child's allowance in the app. Is the change immediate?

Yes, the change is instant. Your child can use their updated allowance right away.

If I set a S$5.00 allowance, is it deducted from my account immediately?

No, your account is only charged when your child makes a purchase. For example, if your child spends S$1.50 on chicken rice, only S$1.50 will be deducted. The remaining S$3.50 allowance will stay in your bank account and be shown as "Allowance Savings" in the "Savings" section of the Smart Buddy app.

My child has used up their allowance. Can they still spend?

No. Once the allowance is used up, no more transactions can be made with their Smart Buddy card or watch until you increase it through the app.

Note: Occasionally, "[OFFLINE $]" and "Daily/Weekly allowance limit exceeded" might appear in their transaction history. This happens when purchases are made while canteen terminals are offline, and the system updates later.

How does the "Auto-transfer Savings" feature work?

This feature makes saving simple for your child:

  1. First, link your child's bank account with Smart Buddy.
  2. Then, activate "Auto-transfer Savings" under their profile in the Smart Buddy mobile app.
  3. You can easily track their total monthly savings from the "Savings" screen in the app.
  4. Once activated, your child's monthly savings will automatically move from your account to theirs by the 10th of the following month.

Please ensure you have enough money in your deduction account during the first 10 days of the month for a smooth transfer.

Smart Buddy App

I can’t edit my child’s profile or adjust allowance. Why?

You might be logged into your child’s access account. Only the parent’s account has permission to edit profiles and adjust allowances. Please see the app for visual cues to find out which account you’re logged into.

Can my child download the Smart Buddy App?

Yes, you can create special access for them. Please refer to our mobile app guide for instructions.

Note: Your child won't be able to change allowance settings with their access.

Can I view my child’s transactions in the app?

Yes, you can view your child's in-school transactions for all linked Smart Buddy, School Smartcard, and EZ-Link cards directly within the app.

Please note the following:

  • Out-of-school transactions: Only transactions made with a Smart Buddy card will be displayed in the app.
  • Financial Assistance Scheme (FAS): If your child uses a linked card as their School Subsidy System (SSS) card under the FAS, transactions associated with this scheme will not appear in the app.

Smart Buddy Watch

Where can I find the Smart Buddy card number on the watch?

The card number is located on the back of the payment chip inside the watch.

How do I insert the payment chip into the watch?
  • 3rd Generation Watch: Use the provided pin, insert it into the side hole, gently push up, and pull out the chip tray.
  • 5th & 6th Generation Watches: Use a flat tool (like a fingernail) to pull out the chip tray.

Place the payment chip on the tray and carefully slide it back in. If you're not sure which generation your watch is, please check the user guide.

Is the Smart Buddy watch free?

Yes, it is provided free of charge for all Smart Buddy applicants who choose the watch with chip option.

Is the Smart Buddy watch waterproof?

It is only splash and water-resistant. Children should avoid wearing it in the shower or swimming pool.

Why can't I sync my child's watch to their profile?

To sync watch data to the app, you must use the same account that was used during the initial watch setup, whether it was the parent's or the child's access account.

My child has lost their Smart Buddy card or watch. What should I do?

You can temporarily disable the watch by switching "Disable Account" to "On" in your child's profile. If found, simply switch it back to "Off."

Note: Disabling only stops use in school and at NETS retailers. MRT/Bus rides will not be disabled.

My child's Smart Buddy watch isn't working correctly (damaged, not charging). What are the next steps?

Your watch is covered by a one-year warranty against manufacturing defects. (Please note that damage from rough play voids the warranty, and straps are not covered).

  • Under Warranty: Request a replacement directly through your Smart Buddy mobile app.
  • Warranty Expired: A new Smart Buddy watch can be bought from eShoppeNow.
How do I dispose of an old Smart Buddy watch?

You have two responsible disposal options:

  1. Service Centre Drop-off:
    • Smart Buddy Watch Service Centre (c/o STYL Solutions Pte Ltd)
    • Address: 3015A Ubi Road 1, #06-02, Singapore 408705
    • Hours: Mon-Fri, 9:30 AM - 5:30 PM | Sat, 9:00 AM - 12:30 PM (Closed on Public Holidays)
  2. E-waste Bin: Find the nearest e-waste bin and drop it off there.

Note: If you're getting a new watch, remember to remove the payment chip from the old watch and insert it into the new one before setting it up in the app.

Other Options for Payment

What other ways can the Smart Buddy payment chip be used, besides the watch?

Beyond the Smart Buddy watch, there are other convenient options to hold the Smart Buddy payment chip:

  • PayBuddy: A versatile accessory that can be used as a keychain or similar item. It measures 3.2cm x 3.2cm x 0.8cm and is made from strong plastic.
  • Smart Buddy Tag: This protective tag can be attached to the strap of a myFirst Fone S2/R1/R1s. It has a lightweight plastic case with a soft silicone cover and a built-in antenna, allowing for tap-and-pay without direct contact.
Note: The above products are not owned by POSB. Smartwatches like myFirst Fone are generally not allowed in schools. Please check with your child's school for their specific policy.
